The Area
The house is situated in the village of Gavarnie, the
highest village in the French Pyrenees (1,375 metres) at the foot of the
famous Cirque de Gavarnie, a spectacular semicircle of fourteen 3000-metre
peaks forming the frontier with Spain.
Gavarnie
is in the Pyrenees National Park and is a World Heritage Site.
It is is a beautiful base for walking, hiking, cycling, bird
watching, pony trekking, and skiing, ice climbing and snowshoeing
in the winter. There are tennis courts and a swimming pool ten
minutes away in Gedre, which also has ice skating and a bobsleigh
run during the winter months.
Close by are Cauterets and the famous Pont
d'Espagne, Luz St Sauveur, a market town with thermal baths
and health centre, a C12th fortified church and castle, and
the pilgrimage centre of Lourdes with the grotto of St Bernadette
and interesting museum set on a crag high above the old town.
